Above is the recording of the live painting class from 28th September, and below is the completed painting from that session.

Pantry bottles, Oil on canvas, 11x7 inches

I arranged some bottles from my pantry as the subject for a still life, with the aim of exploring values, particularly value keys. I opted for a limited palette of three colours: lemon yellow, rose madder (quinacridone), ultramarine blue, and titanium white. I restricted the value range to 3-9 (where 1-9 represents the widest value range I can achieve with my pigments).

Why do this? Much of painting involves interpretation, even when aiming for naturalism. Pigments are inherently limited compared to what we perceive directly, so interpretation is necessary. By further restricting both the value and hue/chroma range beyond what I’d usually use—normally with my split primary palette and convenience tertiary colours like Payne’s grey or transparent oxide red—I intentionally made things harder. This required thoughtful compromises to represent the colour relationships in a way that feels truthful, though not strictly naturalistic. These restrictions can also lead to some interesting visual effects.

As usual, there's commentary during the live portion of the class (the first three hours), while the remainder is mostly silent. I find it difficult to paint and talk simultaneously, especially without a live audience—so apologies for the quieter sections, but I hope you can fill in the gaps!

I hope you enjoy the recording, and feel free to reach out with any questions or comments

The next live class will be on Saturday, 19th October, starting at 5pm GMT (12pm New York and 9am San Diego).

The classes typically run for about 3 hours. Zoom login details are below, and you're welcome to join or leave at any time. If you can't make it or miss part of the session, don’t worry—I’ll be recording it and publishing it on my Substack afterwards.

For the next class, I'm considering exploring aspects of abstraction, focusing on edges, brushwork, tools, and texture.

You’re welcome to paint alongside the session and share what you’re working on—it's an informal space for conversation and exploration of all things painting.

I hope you enjoy the recording and look forward to seeing you in a future class!

Happy painting,
Alex
